Media Release: Greening the West, 'an exemplary initiative'

Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) President, Laura Murray, has awarded Greening the West the President’s Award at the 2018 Planning Institute Awards (VIC) held on Friday.

Greening the West is a regional initiative with City West Water as a major partner. The project delivers positive health and social outcomes for Melbourne’s west through urban greening initiatives with water being the key enabler for greener open spaces.

“Last month we celebrated the planting of the 1,000,000th tree at Altona in Melbourne’s west. It’s something that only could have done in partnership through Greening the West, and has created happier, healthier spaces for our communities to enjoy,” said City West Water Managing Director, David Ryan.

The President’s Award for Planning Excellence demonstrates leading practice, leadership and achievement in planning.

“Melbourne’s western suburbs are some of the fastest growing in Australia.  As we continue to facilitate this growth, there is a continued need and social responsibility as planners to ensure the suburbs we create are healthy, sustainable and liveable and leave a positive legacy for generations to come,” said PIA President Laura Murray.

“Greening the West is an exemplary initiative which shows just what can be achieved when a range of disciplines and sectors work together to achieve joint goals and outcomes for the greater good,” said Laura Murray.

Greening the West has been used as a model for other similar initiatives across Victoria.
