All businesses and institutions in our service area that discharge trade waste must have a valid trade waste agreement.

A trade waste agreement contains the terms and conditions under which trade waste will be accepted.

Examples of trade waste customers are:

Trade waste agreement requirements

To ensure trade waste does not have an unacceptable impact on the sewer system, agreements issued to these customers may include some, or all of, the following requirements:

  • The installation and maintenance of trade waste treatment apparatus to pre-treat your wastewater before it is discharged.
  • The installation and maintenance of trade waste monitoring equipment (e.g. flow measurement, pH and temperature devices).
  • Restrictions on the rate at which trade waste can be discharged to City West Water’s sewer.
  • Sampling, that the trade waste agreement holder must arrange, to confirm both compliance with trade waste acceptance criteria and determine trade waste charges.
  • The preparation of a Risk Assessment to demonstrate the risks posed by the trade waste discharge have been considered and are appropriately managed.

 

We work with trade waste applicants to ensure the risks they pose to the sewer system are appropriately managed before issuing an agreement. Agreements may also contain ongoing requirements to ensure risks continue to be managed throughout the agreement term.

Trade waste for all other businesses and institutions FAQs

If you are setting up a new business you may be required to install and maintain pre-treatment prior to your discharge point to sewer to so that your wastewater complies with our approved Acceptance Criteria.

In some cases we may issue you a Customer-Specific Acceptance Criteria if the risk is considered acceptable.

Customers may also apply to City West Water to amend the Approved Acceptance Criteria, subject to approval by the Essential Services Commission. Refer to the Trade Waste Customer Charter for more information.

If your business is found to discharge trade waste that does not meet the Acceptance Criteria outlined in your trade waste agreement, it will be considered non-compliant and you will be required to take action to address the non-compliance. We will advise you of our requirements, typically through a non-compliance notice.

What standards do I need to meet to discharge to sewer?

Trade waste discharges to sewer must comply with the Approved Acceptance Criteria for Discharge (PDF) to the sewer system. City West Water is under no obligation to accept non-compliant trade waste but can do so under certain conditions.

We will specify sampling requirements of the trade waste discharged from your site in Schedule 3 of your trade waste agreement. If you don’t have a Schedule 3 in your agreement, then you are not required to do any trade waste sampling unless directed by a City West Water representative.

If required to do so, you are responsible for organising trade waste sampling, as specified in Schedule 3 of your trade waste agreement. We may also undertake trade waste sampling at your site. The sampling we undertake is independent of the Schedule 3 sampling requirements in your trade waste agreement.
