To assist customers make their fire sprinkler systems as efficient as possible, Victoria’s Plumbing Industry Commission in partnership with Melbourne Water utilities, developed the Guide to Fire Sprinkler System Water Saving.
Clean in place
Cleaning systems use a significant amount of drinking water, as well as involving the use of a lot of chemicals and producing trade waste. While automated Clean In Place (CIP) systems are more efficient than manual washing systems, they are often poorly understood by those operating them and as a result are operated below standard.
Typically it is possible to reduce water use, chemical demand and trade waste load from these systems by 30-50% through process optimisation, product scheduling and improvements to the CIP system.
Often a substantial improvement can be obtained by simple, cost effective management and operational controls. In other circumstances more sophisticated and innovative techniques will be required to minimise water and reagent use and waste water generation. Functional open space
Irrigation of open spaces accounts for more than half of the water used by local councils and elite sports venues. Approximately 1.6GL of water is used annually for irrigation in City West Water’s service area alone.
In recognising the value of functional open space, and to assist customers to be as efficient as possible in using water for irrigation, Smart Water Fund and City West Water developed the Best Practice Guidelines for Functional Open Space.
