Making sure our sewers are in top shape
We use the latest in close circuit television (CCTV) technology to inspect the sewer pipes within our service area to ensure they operate well, especially at peak times.
How the CCTV sewer technology works
A CCTV camera is mounted on a miniature four wheel drive tractor, which provides all terrain access. The tractor is lowered into the sewer and is manoeuvred along the pipe by remote control and relays 360 degree images back to a monitor screen in a nearby truck.
These images give engineers the chance to find any cracks or blocks which could cause problems during times of heavy use and schedule necessary repairs.
We inspect around 40 kilometres of sewer using the CCTV technology each year, including pipes serving major venues including the MCG, Flemington Racecourse, Telstra Dome, and the Rod Laver Arena.
For example, in preparation for the 2008 AFL finals series, we commenced a thorough inspection of the sewer network around the Melbourne Cricket Ground to ensure they can handle the increased load during this year’s AFL final series.
Sewage flows can increase more than five fold during half time on grand final day, so the pipes must be in top shape to deal with up to 95,000 footy fans.
