Young multicultural soccer players living in Victoria came together in March 2008 to play the first ever Cultural Diversity Cup in Altona.

On the ball when it comes to cultural diversity

The event was held at Altona East Soccer Ground, as part of the Victorian Government’s Cultural Diversity Week celebrations, and featured three competition matches, with players from Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia taking part.

Long-standing rivals SBS and Channel 31 went head to head in a special feature match, refereed by Vasili Kanidiadis, from Channel 31’s hit program, Vasili’s Garden. Melbourne Victory also got into the spirit, providing match balls for the day.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for players to celebrate their cultural differences and their common love of sport. It was also a great way for organisations such as ours, the MFB and Victoria Police to celebrate cultural diversity and build relationships with our local community.

The Diversity Cup was sponsored by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and City West Water, and was supported by Victoria Police, Football Federation Victoria, TAC and MFB.
