Looking After the Sewerage System

All water that goes down drains and toilets in your home is discharged to the sewerage system.

If You Think You May Have a Sewerage Blockage

Usually the first sign of a sewer blcokage is sewage rising back up through the gully trap or sewer connection point in your yard, a build up in the toilet bowl when you flush your toilet or you may notice that the water in your sink, shower or bath is not flowing down the drain freely.

What Should You Do?

The first thing to do is check the water level in your City West Water sewerage connection point, if you can get to it. The connection point will be a boundary trap or inspection shaft and is generally located along the perimeter of your property. If you need help locating your sewerage services, you can call Casey Inspection Services on 9889 5640, who can provide you with a copy of your property service plan which includes the location of inspection shafts, boundary traps and other internal fittings.

If You Think You May Have An Inspection Shaft

An inspection shaft is a vertical pipe set in a concrete surround marked with 'IS' which stands for 'Inspection Shaft'. You need to lift the lid to check the water level. Please be aware that the lid can be heavy or awkward and you may need help to lift it. If the water level is high it may be City West Water's responsibility to repair the blockage and you should call us on 1800 132 642 and we can come out and inspect the problem. If the water level is low, it is probably a blockage in your pipes and you should call a plumber to investigate and repair the problem.

If You Think You May Have a Boundary Trap

A boundary trap is generally a vertical pipe with exposed vents. Remove the cap and look through the vents to see if sewage is rising or is at a high level. If the water level is high it may be City West Water's responsibility to repair the blockage and you should call us on 1800 132 642. We can come out and inspect the problem. If the water level is low, it is probably a blockage in your pipes and you should call a plumber to investigate and repair the problem.

If You Can't Access Your Connection Point

If your connection point is not accessible, you can't find it, or you need to consult with us about the water level, please call us on 1800 132 642. We will try to help you to work out whose responsibility the blockage is over the phone, or arrange to come out and assess the problem.

If you have called a plumber without checking the water level first and it is found to be a problem in our pipes, the plumber will need to contact us so that we can send out our own staff to fix the problem at our expense.
