Domestic Water Filters

Given our water supply’s compliance with Victoria’s drinking water standards and Australian drinking water quality guidelines, we do not believe there is a need to use domestic water filters.

In many cases, individual filter units do little to improve household water supply quality. For instance, it may be claimed that filters remove substances that are not even present to any significant degree in our water supply. In some cases, filter units can actually cause a deterioration of water quality.

Melbourne’s water supply largely originates from protected catchments and therefore receives minimal treatment or filtration. The resultant, natural presence of some fine suspended particles can eventually accumulate on filters. This can be incorrectly perceived as indicating substandard water quality, when it is simply a reflection of Melbourne’s high quality, natural water supply.

Customers considering the purchase of a water filter should carefully evaluate their own needs as well as apparent benefits and relevance of individual units. City West Water neither undertakes nor approves of attempts to sell water filters on a “door to door” basis.

It should be noted, however, that there are situations (eg. industrial applications, medical treatment) where the use of specific, purpose-built water filters is suitable or necessary.

  • Does City West Water conduct door-to-door water quality testing or water filter sales?

City West Water does not conduct door-to-door selling. From time to time we receive calls from customers concerned about water testing information provided to them by people offering water quality tests and selling water filters. These individuals do not represent or act on behalf of City West Water and we do not endorse these companies or their products.

City West Water representatives wear a uniform and are always able to produce identification. Customers can call City West Water on 1800 132 642 to confirm the identification of our representatives.

  • Do I really need a water filter?

Some of our customers choose to use water filters. We believe that there is no proven requirement for using domestic water filters in our area, due to the high level of compliance with water quality standards and Australian drinking water quality guidelines.

In many cases, individual filter units have little effect on improving the quality of a household’s water supply. For instance, it may be claimed that filters remove substances that, in fact, are not even present to any significant degree in our water supply.
