Recycled Water- A Smarter Approach
City West Water is helping to conserve Melbourne’s precious water supplies for future generations by supplying Class A recycled water.
Most of the Class A recycled water supplied by City West Water will be produced by Melbourne Water at its Western Treatment Plant. City West Water will then deliver the recycled water to customers through distinctive purple pipes.
Class A recycled water is produced in line with strict standards and guidelines developed by the Department of Human Services and the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) who also monitor the production of recycled water and ongoing quality assurance programs. Class A recycled water in Victoria is treated to a standard very close to drinking water. City West Water will regularly test the quality to ensure standards are being met.
Our supply of Class A recycled water:
- will save a significant amount of drinking water in the Werribee area
- will reduce the amount of wastewater discharged to Port Phillip Bay
- provides a safe, alternative water source
- will reduce demand on our water catchments
- contributes to the Government’s water recycling target of 20% by 2010.
Class A recycled water can be used for:
- Toilet flushing
- Garden watering (including use on vegetable gardens)
- Municipal irrigation (parks, sporting fields and other public open spaces)
- General outdoor use, including car washing, construction and washdown
- Filling fountains.
Recycled water is not for:
- Drinking
- Cooking or other kitchen purposes
- Bathing or showering
- Filling swimming pools and spas
- Children’s water toys.
