The park was officially opened by Deputy Mayor of Maribyrnong, Cr Catherine Cumming on 20 February.

The decision to create the park was influenced by local residents who became the Southamption Park Residents Group when they saw the opportunity to transform an asphalt car park into green, open space for the community.
Caroline Hardy, a member of the Southampton Park Residents Group, has three recommendations for others involved in a community open /green space project:
- Don’t give up
- Treat Council with respect, and
- Be patient.
What a fantastic example of locals leading the charge of #greeningthewest !
