Greening the West – a partner program developed and facilitated by City West Water to improve the health and wellbeing of communities in Melbourne’s west –  won two national awards for leadership and innovation last week.

City West Water Customers, Community and Environment General Manager Cameron FitzGerald said Greening the West brings together community partners to deliver projects that one organisation or group would struggled to achieve alone.

“Each Greening the West partner brings with them local knowledge and a variety of resources and expertise that when combined deliver projects and act as a unified voice for the continued greening of the western suburbs,” he said.

“Creating green space is not just a matter of beautifying an area, it’s about delivering health and lifestyle benefits to residents through improved air quality and increased recreational space.

“Much research by independent experts, universities and government department goes into ensuring Greening the West projects are strategic and sustainable with the right type of vegetation planted in the right conditions and a management plan in place.”

Mr FitzGerald said City West Water started Greening the West in response to repercussions of the millennium drought which left sporting fields unplayable, and saw many trees die well short of their life expectancy.

“City West Water wanted to do its bit to ensure Melbourne’s west didn’t experience these conditions again and started looking for green spaces to deliver alternative water supplies and partners to help deliver them.

“Since then Greening the West has grown in focus to incorporate tree planting, re-vegetation and urban greening projects, and membership has grown from 17 partner organisations to 23.”

The program won the Government Leadership Award at the Urban Development Institute of Australia awards on 2 December, and the Program Innovation Award Category at the Victorian Water Awards on 1 December.

Greening the West facilitates projects in the western municipalities of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham.
