Students teach each other about environment, water conservation and community topics...

Kids Teaching Kids was the order of the day at St Mary’s Primary School in Williamstown at an interactive student conference, with water conservation at the forefront of the day’s lesson plan.

The conference, organised with the support of City West Water’s Water – Learn It! Live It! team, provided an opportunity for students to teach each other about environment, water conservation and community topics.

City West Water Managing Director, Anne Barker, said she was pleased to support the conference, which was a fun way to instil an ongoing awareness of environmental issues in school aged children.

“The Kids Teaching Kids conference was a fantastic event – a great way to get children thinking about environmental and community topics, including water conservation,” Ms Barker said.

“City West Water does what it can to foster a culture of water conservation in children, and at events like this conference, we get to spread the water conservation message even further.”

St Mary’s played host to schools from all over the Hobsons Bay area, with up to 100 students from five schools attending. Schools included Williamstown North Primary School, St Augustine’s Yarraville, St Martin de Porres School Laverton, Queen of Peace Altona Meadows, and St Leo’s Altona North.

The conference provided a fun and interactive environment where children were able to learn from each other about topics that they can have an impact on. Workshops encompassed all manner of environmental topics including saving water, water smart cities, the water cycle, renewable energy, and pollution.

Ms Barker said the conference was just one of many events that City West Water supports during the year to spread the water conservation message.

“We regularly support events like the Kids Teaching Kids day, which engage children to respect the environment and its precious resources, as well as help them understand how their actions can have an impact on our environment.”

About Water - Learn it! Live it!
Water - Learn it! Live it! has been developed by Melbourne’s four water authorities: City West Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water and Melbourne Water, and is funded through the State Government’s Our Water Our Future program. Schools need to reduce their water use, incorporate water conservation lessons across all grades and promote water conservation messages to their local community to achieve the top ‘gold’ level accreditation.
