From 1 September 2010, customers will be able to apply for a 28 day exemption to use drinking water to establish a new water efficient lawn - best suited to Melbourne's climate.

The 28-Day Exemption - to transition to warm season grass provides Melbourne residents with the ability to apply to use drinking water to establish a lawn using a warm season grass.

As the name suggests, the exemption applies to the establishment of warm season grasses only. The ban on watering of existing lawns rermains. 

After the exemption period ends, applicants are subject to the full breadth of current watering restrictions - which prohibits the watering of grassed areas at any time with drinking water.
