City West Water Water LILI school children

National Water Week

National Water Week occurs every October and is designed to assist our community to take action to help protect and conserve our most precious resource – water.

Water – Learn it! Live it! National Water Week Competitions.

Thank you to all of the schools who participated in our National Water Week poster and photo competitions.

Primary school poster competition

Primary school students submitted a range of colourful and creative poster entries reflecting the theme ‘Healthy Catchments, Healthy Communities’. Posters were judged based on set criteria, including originality, use of art materials, and ability to convey a water related message. The final scores between the finalists from each category were extremely close.

All first place winners from the City West Water region were submitted to the Victorian State finals, where our prep entry, by Tilda Hutchesson from Merri Creek Primary School, won first prize.

The 2011 City West Water winning posters are below.

Secondary school photography competition

Secondary school students submitted photographs reflecting the theme ‘Wonderful Water – Water for all Living Things’. Talented photographers snapped photos of puddles, gardens and water for drinking. Photographs were judged according to set criteria, including relevance to the theme and the ability to evoke a positive emotional response. Congratulations to all of our prize winning photographers.

Water Week Idol 2011

This year’s Water Week Idol was bigger than ever, with nine schools from the City West Water region performing a range of water themed songs to celebrate National Water Week. BMW Edge at Federation Square offered a sensational backdrop and the Feleke African Drummers had the crowd dancing to the beat of their drums. MC Harley Breen cheekily cracked jokes about ‘number twos’ and 2010 X Factor runner up Sally Chatfield was there to offer encouragement and to praise the efforts of our Idol stars.

Congratulations to our prize winning schools: St Mary’s Primary School Williamstown, St Martin de Porres Primary School, Avondale Heights and Merri Creek Primary School. These schools received funding towards school water saving projects.

Congratulations also go to Ardeer Primary School, Jackson School, Keilor Views Primary School, Trinity Catholic School Richmond, Taylors Lakes Primary School and Werribee Primary School. Their performances were vibrant, colourful and most importantly shared a broad knowledge of Melbourne’s water and the need to look after our waterways.
