William Street Mains Project
After over 150 years of service, it's time to upgrade the William Street water mains, and that's precisely what we're doing at the moment. To minimise disruption to traffic, business and residents in the area, works will be undertaken in stages, with only northbound traffic lanes being closed. Southbound lanes, and tram tracks, remain open.

Stages 4 and 5 are nearing completion
Stage 6 begins with works at the Flinders/William Street intersection
Stages 4 and 5
Work on Stages 4 and 5 is nearing completion with most of William and Howard Streets reopened from Dudley to Queensberry Streets, except a small section from Rosslyn to Victoria Street. See the updated Stage 4 map below. Remaining works at the Victoria/Howard Street and Howard/Queensberry Street intersections are due to be carried out by mid March.
Stage 6
Stage 6 works began on 20 February at the intersection of William and Flinders Streets. This will take roughly four weeks and we're doing what we can to minimise traffic and noise disruption while the works take place.
During these works, right-hand turning lanes from Queensbridge Street onto Flinders Street will change. During the day, one right-hand turning lane will be kept open but at night this will be closed and a detour will be in place. We've put together a detour map below. Southbound traffic on William Street and eastbound on Flinders Street may also be temporarily reduced to one lane during these works.
Once work on the intersection is complete, works will move up William Street from Flinders to Collins Street and then along to Bourke Street. Northbound lanes on William Street will be closed during these works while southbound lanes will remain open. More information and detour maps will be available here closer to the start dates of these works.
