Recycled Water

Water Cycle - water recyclingFollowing the standard treatment process, which utilises a modern ‘lagoon’ system, naturally occurring bacteria, and sludge treatment plants, the effluent is further treated to produce Class A recycled water that complies with EPA and the Department of Human Services’ standards.Staff at the Western Treatment Plant monitor the treatment procedure to deal with fluctuations in sewage quality.

City West Water also plays a part in maintaining the quality of sewage reaching the plant through its Cleaner Production program, which assists local industries to reduce salt and pollutant levels, as close as possible to where they enter the sewage system. It is through this ongoing monitoring and improvements to our wastewater systems that we are able to meet both EPA Victoria and Department of Human Services recycled water standards and regulations.

Although not intended for drinking or bathing, Class A recycled water is a safe and secure water source that reduces demand on existing drinking water supplies. It has a number of uses which will save a significant amount of drinking water in the Werribee area and reduce treated wastewater discharge to Port Phillip Bay. Recycled water is currently supplied to the Werribee area for use at the Werribee Open Range Zoo, the National Equestrian Centre, Werribee Park Mansion gardens and Golf Course and the
Werribee Irrigation District for uses such as:

  • Turf growing
  • Irrigation of sporting fields and landscapes
  • Washdown water
  • Irrigation of a golf course and driving range

City West Water is also planning to deliver Class A recycled water to three new major housing estates in the Western Growth Corridor. The recycled water supplied to these residential areas will provide a secure and reliable supply for intended uses such as:

  • Garden watering
  • Toilet flushing
  • Car washing

Public areas, services and facilities that will also benefit from recycled water use include:

  • Local parklands and open spaces
  • Fountains and ornamental ponds
  • Local sporting grounds and golf courses
  • Fire fighting.
