Tips For KitchensÂ
Fact
Dripping taps can waste 30 to 200 litres of water per day.
Ways to Save
Don’t let the tap run. Defrost frozen goods in the refrigerator, or in the microwave, instead of under a running tap. Fill a basin to wash fruit and vegetables rather than under running water.
Change old dishwasher habits. Hand scrape dishes and utensils before loading the dishwasher rather than rinsing. Alternatively, pre-soak utensils and other items in sinks before loading into dishwasher. Consider reusing the final rinse water in the next cycle if possible. Train staff to operate the dishwasher correctly.
Wash full loads only. Waiting until the dishwasher is full saves water and energy and reduces the amount of detergent entering the sewerage system.
Report and respond to leaks. Encourage users or employees to inform maintenance personnel promptly if they notice taps leaking.
Be wise with waste. Although not using vast amounts of water, garbage disposal units add to the pollutants in sewers and reduce wastewater quality. Use strainers or traps with a mesh screen to collect food waste for later disposal. Many companies provide a service of collecting food wastes to make compost for garden fertiliser.
