Hundreds of school students from across Melbourne’s west have the chance to learn more about Melbourne’s water cycle during National Water Week from 21 to 27 October.
City West Water has organised three days of fabulous activities to help students learn about the important role water plays in the ecosystem and their lives.
Primary school students will join Wilbur the Waterdrop at Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant and have the chance to develop slogans and logos celebrating the National Water Week theme, Water for Life.
They will also get a bird’s eye view of Melbourne’s catchment system with rivers, creeks and bays and even a rain storm, thanks to Melbourne Water’s active catchment education model.
Secondary school students will visit Iramoo Sustainable Community Centre to investigate the health of local waterways by examining macro invertebrates. They will also explore unique grassland and wetlands habitats.
City West Water’s Managing Director Anne Barker said the event is a fantastic opportunity for school children to learn about the importance of water to their everyday lives and the wider environment.
“National Water Week really puts the spotlight on our precious water and encourages people to protect and conserve our resources and habitats, particularly amongst our young people who are the next generation of water savers,” she said.
“These activities will be a great way for them to gain a better understanding of a wide range of water issues ranging from drinking water, sewage treatment to rivers and creeks and water recycling in a fun environment.
“We’d like to thank the many organisations who have made these fantastic activities possible, including Iramoo Sustainable Community Centre, Werribee Plains Waterwatch, Melbourne Water, Mambourin and the Victorian Volcanic Plains Project.”
City West Water is also running a writing competition for people living, working or attending school in its service area. Entries can be a poem, short story or non-fiction piece about water, with winning entries published in a special booklet.
