Maribyrnong residents will have plenty of opportunities to swap their old showerhead for a free, three-star water efficient one as part of a special water-wise fortnight.
City West Water, in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council, is holding showerhead exchanges in eight locations for two weeks from 30 July to 12 August 2007.
City West Water Managing Director, Anne Barker, said it was great to see Maribyrnong City Council supporting the program and making it easier for residents to reduce their water use.
“This is the biggest local showerhead exchange we’ve done – for two weeks, at eight locations and with one goal – to save water,” Ms Barker said.
“Households can save up to 12,000 litres of water a year by changing their old showerhead. If 80 local residents exchanged their showerheads, they would save enough water to fill the main pool at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre every year, a fantastic achievement.”
“While the recent heavy rain is great news, it is important we continue to be mindful of how we use water in and around the home. Changing your showerhead is just one of the many small ways people can make a big difference to water conservation,” Ms Barker said.
Maribyrnong City Council Acting Mayor, Cr Dina Lynch, is encouraging the entire community to do their part for the environment.
“This FREE exchange service is an opportunity for our community to play an active role in confronting the water problem – we can really make a difference if we act together as a community,” she said.
“The use of water-efficient showerheads is an easy and effective way to achieve significant water savings at home, while saving money on your household bills. And there is a pick up location to suit everyone in Maribyrnong,” said Cr Lynch.
Old showerheads are recycled into scrap metal and proceeds donated to local charities.
