Education is the Key to Water Conservation

11 July 2007

Teachers are encouraged to sign up their schools to take part in Water – Learn It! Live It! education program specifically designed for primary and secondary students, focusing on a positive shift in students knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards water conservation.

Currently 58 schools in the City West Water area are participating in the program, which has been designed to allow schools and teachers to network and build on curriculum opportunities.

Water – Learn It! Live It! is a joint initiative of the  Metropolitan water businesses (City West Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water and Melbourne Water) and a dedicated education officer is available to assist schools in moving through the milestones and to achieve accreditation, explained City West Water Managing Director Anne Barker.

“Teaching students about water education and conservation is important, especially in the classroom where they can develop a knowledge and awareness of water as a precious resource.”

“Young people are our next generation of water savers and we believe this program can help build a strong foundation for the future.”

“Students learn about small behavioural changes that can be implemented both at school and at home. They also learn about why it rains and how drought occurs. Every drop that is saved puts less pressure on our catchments and ensures long term sustainability of our water supply.”

The program consists of a tiered milestones program (bronze, silver or gold) to achieve accreditation as a Water - Learn It! Live It! school. Professional development for teachers is also provided every semester free of charge and casual replacement teacher costs are covered.
