New mains in the pipeline for inner Melbourne

8 April 2008

City West Water is investing $750,000 to give Melbourne’s Bourke Street and Carlton’s Lygon Street new water mains.

The water authority will spend more than $6 million to replace around five kilometres of water mains in the City of Melbourne this year, with work starting on the water mains in Bourke Street and Lygon Street this month.

Around 430 metres of the Bourke Street water main will be replaced between Spencer and King Streets and 200 metres of the Lygon Street water main will be replaced between Victoria and Queensberry Streets by the end of the month.

Managing Director, Anne Barker, said City West Water was renewing its water supply system in the area to ensure it would continue to serve the community now and in future years.

“We’re making a significant investment to renew our mains network in the inner city suburbs, as part of a three year, $62 million renewal program,” Ms Barker said.

“The works in Lygon Street and Bourke Street mark the start of this year’s $6 million work program for Melbourne’s inner city area, which will ensure our customers continue to receive a reliable water supply.

“We’ve made every effort to minimise disruption to residents and businesses, and we very much appreciate their patience as we carry out these important works,” Ms Barker said.

Work will also be carried out on other major water mains over the coming months, including Flinders Street, Melbourne; Simpson Street, East Melbourne; and Victoria Parade on the fringe of the CBD.

“These major works will help reduce the amount of water lost through bursts and leaks, provide an important boost to our drinking water supplies and limit disruption to traffic and residents during maintenance works,” Ms Barker said.
