Local writers celebrate water through words

Seventeen budding writers saw their work in print this month, when City West Water launched Water Dreaming, a collection of stories from its 2007 National Water Week Writing Competition.

The stories are on the theme of water and are by residents in City West Water’s area. Winners in four different categories had their stories published, as well as receiving certificates and book vouchers.

The launch was held at Borders Bookstore, Highpoint on Tuesday 4 March. Copies of Water Dreaming will be sent to local libraries, primary schools and secondary schools.

The competition features winners and commended stories in categories open to adults, secondary school students, primary school students and residents from an English as a Secondary Language (ESL) background.

Managing Director of City West Water, Anne Barker, said it was timely that Water Dreaming had been released in March, with water conservation still high on the agenda.

“One of the strongest themes in the book is saving water and it has never been so important, with water storage levels so low and Melbourne is still on water restrictions,” Ms Barker said.

“I’d like to congratulate each of the authors whose work appears in Water Dreaming, from primary school students writing about rain drops to adults writing about their memories of waiting for rain when they were children. Each story uses water in a different way, yet each is entertaining and very well written.”
