Altona Gate Showerhead Exchange Leads by Example

3 June 2009

Altona Gate Shopping Centre is leading by example while hosting a free showerhead exchange for shoppers to help slash water use and hot water bills at home.

In addition to providing a convenient location for local residents to easily swap over their old showerheads for new efficient ones, Altona Gate has also swapped over showerhead facilities in the centre’s Fernwood Women’s Health Club.

City West Water Managing Director, Anne Barker, said she was pleased that Altona Gate was supporting the local showerhead exchange program, and urged residents to swap their old inefficient showerheads for a 3-star water saving one.

“Water is our most precious resource, and we all have a responsibility to save as much of it as we can, and it’s pleasing that Altona Gate is standing by its own commitment to save water and helping shoppers to do the same,” Ms Barker said.

“Showers are one of the biggest users of water at home, and with the State Government’s Target 155 campaign encouraging people to limit water use to 155 litres of water per person per day; a water efficient showerhead can make achieving that goal much easier.

Ms Barker said Altona Gate had achieved substantial water savings in recent years through a number of measures that have slashed water usage and costs.

“Through a handful of initiatives, Altona Gate Shopping Centre has reduced its annual water usage by 24% - and by installing a free 3-star showerhead, householders can also achieve substantial savings at home.

“Older style showerheads can use between 15-20 litres of water per minute compared to a 3-star showerhead that uses only nine litres per minute, helping to slash hot water bills and save up to 13,500 litres of water per person per year.”

Ms Barker said the showerhead exchange has been made as easy as possible and to install the showerhead takes a matter of minutes.

“Residents only need to bring in their old showerhead to the Altona Gate with their water bill to get a new water saving showerhead.

“City West Water customers have been great supporters of the showerhead exchange program, with tens of thousands of showerheads swapped in recent years.

“I encourage everyone who hasn’t already done so to take advantage of the free showerhead and watch their water usage drop dramatically,” Ms Barker said.

The showerhead exchange is on site at Altona Gate Shopping Centre until 14 June.
