Growling in the Grass a Treat for Brimbank Students

27 May 2009

Primary school students from across Brimbank will be treated to a comprehensive learning experience on all matters environmental at the Growling in the Grass workshops on Wednesday 27 May.

Organised in partnership with Brimbank City Council, Iramoo, WaterWatch Maribyrnong and City West Water, the program is a fun filled way for students to learn about important environmental topics including the water cycle and river water quality, endangered native animal species and vegetation and composting.

City West Water Managing Director Anne Barker said that learning activity days like Growling in the Grass are a great way to teach children important environmental topics that affect their every day lives.

“City West Water is involved in many community-based activities like these, and it is a great way to convey an integrated environmental awareness message to our community,” Ms Barker said.

“While City West Water’s involvement is based primarily around the importance of water conservation, today’s activity day enables children to learn many aspects of environmentally sustainable lifestyle habits that can last a lifetime.”

Growling in the Grass is a free activity day being held at Brimbank Park, and will see students from Glengala Primary School, Copperfield College, St Augustine’s Primary and Our Lady of the Nativity Primary.

Students will participate in interactive learning workshops where they’ll get to see native reptiles and insects, learn about animal predator and prey interactions, be taught about local river wildlife, and get their hands dirty learning about composting and the water around the globe.

As an added bonus students will hear indigenous storytelling from Wurrundjeri tribe local Ian Hunter, who’ll explain the relationship between his ancestors, the land, and the environment.

Ms Barker said she was pleased to learn of the community’s positive response to the Growling in the Grass day, with more than 100 students expected on the day.

“With a fantastic mix of environmental topics on offer for students, this event will teach children at a young age how humans can affect our environment and what they can do to minimise that impact.”

“Water conservation is such an important message, but it’s just part of many environmentally sustainable imperatives that events like these do such a great job of teaching to our children.”
