Melbourne's West Kicks Off for Cultural Diversity

27 March 2009

Young soccer players representing communities from across the world will gather to play for the 2nd Annual Cultural Diversity Cup tournament at McIvor Reserve in Yarraville on Saturday 28 March.

The tournament, an integral event of Cultural Diversity Week, will include five competition matches starting at 10:30am leading to the Grand Final playoff at 3:35pm.

Matches will feature players from China, Ethiopia, Sudan, as well as a play-off between rivals SBS and Channel 31 - all aiming for a place in the Grand Final.

Managing Director of City West Water, Anne Barker, said the tournament was a great way to bring diverse communities together in the spirit of friendly competition.

“City West Water’s customers come from over 100 different cultural groups with more than a third speaking a language other than English at home, and the Diversity Cup enables us to establish and build relationships with many of these groups,” Ms Barker said

“At City West Water, we recognise we have an important place in the community, and that’s why we’re pleased to help celebrate the diversity of our customer base by supporting these events.”

“After the phenomenal success of last year’s event, this year’s competition is set to be a fine display of sporting prowess on the field as well as a wonderful opportunity for members of different cultures and backgrounds to come together.”

George Lekakis, Chairman of the Victorian Multicultural Commission said the Cultural Diversity Cup promises to be an exciting day for players and spectators watching from the sidelines.

“It is great to see so many local organisations coming together to make this soccer tournament possible,” he said.

“Not only is it a fantastic opportunity for the players to celebrate their cultural differences and their common love of the sport, it is also a great way for service providers like Victoria Police, City West Water and the MFB to build relationships with the local community.

The Cultural Diversity Cup is sponsored by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and City West Water, and supported by Victoria Police, Football Federation Victoria, TAC and MFB and is part of the Victorian Government’s Cultural Diversity Week celebrations.
