New Standpipes Cater to Recycled Water Demand

8 October 2009

Three new standpipes managed by City West Water in Hoppers Crossing have begun operation to supply much-needed recycled water and drinking water to its customers.

Two of the new standpipes are dedicated to recycled water, and will allow approved water carters to access recycled water directly from its source at the Werribee Treatment Plant in Hoppers Lane, Werribee.

Since 2006, City West Water has been supplying Class A recycled water to relieve the pressure of drought for councils and sporting clubs, which are subject to limited watering under current Stage 3A water restrictions.

Over the past twelve months, over 240 million litres has been supplied from the standpipes – enough to fill 120 Olympic sized swimming pools.

City West Water Managing Director, Anne Barker, said the new standpipes will cater to the growing demand for recycled water in Melbourne’s west.

“Despite the recent rain we’ve had, our water storages are still just over one-third full, so the recycled water standpipes continue to be an important source of non-drinkable water for many of our non-residential customers,” Ms Barker said.

“Recycled water has become a vital solution for councils and sporting clubs in Melbourne’s CBD and western suburbs, and helps to keep their lawns, gardens, parks, sports and recreation grounds green.

“Recycled water is now a smart alternative to using drinking water for irrigation and without it many sports clubs and councils that rely on it for their watering needs would struggle to keep facilities useable.”

Ms Barker said that in addition to the two new recycled water standpipes, the third standpipe will provide access to drinking water for the community.

“While we are pleased to provide better access to recycled water to our non-residential customers, there will always be a need for drinking water.

“By providing both types of water at the one location, we’re providing the community with a first class water access facility.”

Water carters and users must apply to City West Water for a permit to collect and use recycled water or drinking water from the standpipes.

Class A recycled water can be safely used for a variety of purposes, including flushing toilets, irrigating public parks, washing cars, dust suppression and fighting fires.
