Support Target 155 Kicks Off at Westfield Airport West

31 July 2009

Support Target 155 in the City of Moonee Valley has been kicked off at Westfield Airport West, with the centre adopting a number of water saving measures and slashing water use by 9 million litres each year.

Centre Manager, Tim Broxham, joined City West Water Managing Director, Anne Barker, to unveil a series of signs and billboards posted around the centre promoting the Airport West’s water saving efforts.

“We’re pleased to be part of the community when it comes to saving water – and by promoting our water saving efforts, we hope to encourage shoppers to continue water saving in their own homes,” Mr Broxham said.

“We’ve dedicated considerable resources to reducing our water use, investing in an upgrade of toilet and washroom facilities, and our fire-sprinkler system which has enabled us to save huge amounts of water.”

Westfield Airport West undertook an upgrade of toilet facilities late in 2007, switching to dual flush toilets, low-flow urinals and tap flow restrictors which dramatically reduced daily water use. The change to fire-sprinkler testing saw water consumption reduced even further.

Ms Barker said she was pleased to see highly recognisable organisations like Westfield lead by example in the area of water conservation, and hopes the centre’s water saving efforts will inspire even more water saving in homes and businesses of shoppers.

“There’s a myth that it’s businesses that are using all of Melbourne’s water, when in fact, households in Melbourne use twice as much as all the non-residential water users across the city,” Ms Barker said.

“I am glad that Westfield Airport West recognises the importance of saving water and has joined the Support Target155 Program, and we’re encouraging Melbourne businesses of all sizes to participate in the Support Target155 program.

“Support Target155 aims to recognise the achievements of non-residential water users in dramatically reducing their water consumption, as well as encouraging all users to look at further ways of saving water,” Ms Barker said

Melbourne’s non-residential customers have reduced water consumption by about 38% since 2000, and this program aims to encourage all businesses to look at ways to save water.”

Businesses wishing to sign up for Support Target155 will be offered materials and advice which will help identify potential water savings.
