Capital Works Renewal

No dig technology is assisting City West Water to replace its old sewers.

During 2006, a customer in Sunshine North experienced three sewerage blockages within a five month period. Investigations into the sewer blockages found that they were caused by tree roots that had displaced and broken the sewer pipe.

City West Water conducts an annual sewer rehabilitation program that aims to reduce these types of incidences which sometimes result in sewer spills. The program uses closed circuit television to provide clear images of the condition inside the pipes and helps to identify the type of rehabilitation required and the urgency of the work.

In this particular case, the broken pipe was replaced by inserting a seven metre long liner sleeve into the existing pipe. This cost-effective method does not require the old pipe to be excavated and minimises disruption to the customers and the community.

Altona Treatment Plant Upgrade

Photo: Staff at the Altona Treatment Plant construction site.City West Water is undertaking a major upgrade of the Altona Treatment Plant to deliver superior treatment standards and pave the way for water recycling in Altona.

For over thirty years, the Altona Treatment Plant has processed the sewage output of the Altona area. Owned and operated by our business, the plant currently serves properties in Altona, Altona Meadows, Point Cook and Laverton and treats a flow of approximately six gigalitres of sewage each year.

The Plant is currently being upgraded to significantly improve the quality of discharge to Port Phillip Bay as well as to provide opportunities for recycled water to be produced at the Plant.

We are also developing plans for construction of a water recycling plant which will deliver recycled water to our nearby customers Kooringal Golf Club and Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club, saving up to approximately 510 million litres of drinking water per year.

As well as upgrading treatment standards we are also implementing a landscape improvement program to enhance the appearance of the site.

Commonwealth Games

In March 2006, we successfully implemented our Commonwealth Games strategy which assisted the Commonwealth Games organisers to make the games successful and incident-free.

Leading up to the Games, we completed maintenance works around the games venues. We also increased the monitoring of water quality and key infrastructure to allow prompt responses to bursts and leaks and to ensure services were adequately maintained.

In addition to having extra staff and management on standby throughout a six week period pre and post-Games, water and sewerage maintenance crews were also on standby around the clock to ensure there were no disruptions to traffic, events or key venues including the Athletes’ Village and the Melbourne Cricket Ground. City West Water also operated a new depot in Collingwood, which allowed field staff to quickly respond to, and repair faults minimising interruptions to the Games.
