Reducing Greasy Waste

We have 3,548 Trade Waste Consents and 2,185 Trade Waste Agreements with our customers, which are documents that stipulate the conditions under which a customer may discharge trade waste to City West Water’s sewer system.

Commercial trade waste often generates wastewater containing fat and other food particles and these substances need to be removed from wastewater before it is discharged to sewer. Grease traps are installed into these businesses so that fats and solids can be separated from the water.

During the year, our trade waste consultants made 3,900 site visits and took 1,000 samples. This, along with samples taken by our customers, detected an average non-compliance rate of less than 1% for commercial customers and 1.1% for industrial customers.

Over 160 new grease traps were installed in 2005-06.
