Improved Efficiency through Cleaner Production

City West Water and industry are working together to reduce drinking water consumption and improve resource efficiency and the quality of trade waste that is disposed to the sewer.

One of City West Water’s major customers, Don Smallgoods, is leading the way in cleaner production practices. We have worked in partnership with Don Smallgoods to reduce their salt discharge from an estimated 12.5 tonnes per day to 2.5 tonnes per day. They have also achieved a reduction in drinking water consumption of 10 kilolitres per day, while increasing production by nearly 50%.

These exceptional reductions are due to key improvements in their operations including: upgrading floor screens, the optimisation of the chiller brine and increased operator awareness. They have also developed a Resource Management Plan focused on water efficiencies and decreasing their salt discharge. This partnership will see further reductions in the future.
