Our Eco-Action Team has implemented a new recycling program to minimise waste at work.

Our Eco-Action Team involves representatives from across City West Water working together to implement environmental initiatives.  This year the team decided to improve our office recycling system to minimise rubbish contamination and maximise recycling rates.

The team introduced new bins into key locations, such as the tea rooms, and separated waste into key groups including: organics (food scraps) recycling, general waste and paper recycling. The bins are colour-coded to visually remind staff of their differences and each bin has signage that informs staff of what should be placed into each bin.

This project has evolved to also include a recycling partnership with Green Collect. Through this partnership staff can now recycle mobile phones and accessories, batteries, DVDs and CDs, corks and printer cartridges.

City West Water is partnering with Federation Square to implement water saving projects and raise the community’s awareness about water conservation.

In May 2006, Federation Square signed a Memorandum of Understanding with City West Water, formalising their commitment to sustainability. The Memorandum of Understanding is designed to assist Federation Square save water, improve sustainability management practices, reduce energy use, minimise waste and extend their water recycling program.

Some of the proposed improvements include reducing the water used in cooling towers and minimising the greasy waste that is discharged to the sewer.

In addition, Federation Square will become the city’s most prominent access point for water-saving messages, ensuring that visitors, as well as residents are aware of the importance of saving water in Melbourne.

The Victorian Government has collaborated with 10 local water authorities, including City West Water, two catchment management authorities, local government and the community to develop the Central Region Sustainable Water Strategy.

The Victorian Government has released the draft Central Region Sustainable Water Strategy which outlines how water resources in the Central Region of Victoria could be managed for the next 50 years.

The strategy has considered the challenges posed by climate change, a growing population, changing water use, and the imperative to improve river health in the Central Region.

The strategy recommends that the region needs to:

  • secure existing water savings
  • increase water conservation in all areas
  • return water back to rivers
  • be smarter at managing existing supplies
  • in the longer term, seek alternative supplies including water recycling, rainwater and stormwater

City West Water has played an active role in the development of the Central Region Sustainable Water Strategy and is committed to acting on its recommendations over the coming years. Click here to go to the Our Water Our Future website.
